Blooming with Aloha: Inside Waialua’s Hibiscus Heaven

DialeD808 journal feature: Waialua's Hibiscus Lady nursery on Oahu's North Shore

On Oʻahu’s North Shore, where the salty ocean breeze mingles with the scent of plumeria, there’s a hidden garden that hums with color, fragrance, and aloha. Step through its gates, and the world seems to slow. Towering green foliage gives way to a symphony of hibiscus blooms — petals in buttery yellows, fiery oranges, deep magentas, and impossible blues that look painted by the Hawaiian sky itself.

At the heart of it all is Jill Coryell, known across the islands simply as The Hibiscus Lady. She greets you with the kind of warmth that makes you feel like an old friend, even if you’ve just met. Within minutes, you realize this is no ordinary nursery — and Jill is no ordinary grower.

From Flight Paths to Flower Paths

Before she was nurturing hibiscus, Jill was flying high — literally. With degrees in Hawaiian Studies and Anthropology, she spent years as a flight attendant, exploring the world from above. Her path to hibiscus began unexpectedly, when she volunteered with the American Hibiscus Society. What started as a casual commitment quickly bloomed into a calling.

She was soon “hanai’ed” (informally adopted) by master hybridizer Barry Schlueter, who taught her the art and science of crossing hibiscus varieties. Under his guidance, Jill began experimenting with her own crosses, chasing beauty, fragrance, and resilience. By the late ’90s, she was selling blooms at local farmers’ markets — and the nickname The Hibiscus Lady stuck.

A Nursery Like No Other

In 1999, Jill founded Hibiscus Lady Nursery in Waialua, a lush sanctuary where nearly every plant — about 99% — is bred and propagated on-site. Her specialty? Scented hibiscus, a rarity in modern hybrids.

Starting with Hawaii’s only naturally scented species — Hibiscus arnottianus and Hibiscus waimeae — she carefully crosses them with robust, modern varieties. Only about 5% of seedlings make the cut, chosen for beauty, scent, strength, and longevity. Every plant is grown on its own roots (never grafted) to ensure health, and every leaf is checked by hand so no pesticides are needed.

The result is a living gallery of hibiscus unlike any you’ve seen — bold colors, unusual petal shapes, and fragrances that range from light citrus to tropical fruit.

Your Chance to Create a Flower That’s Yours Alone

Visiting the Hibiscus Lady’s nursery isn’t just a tour — it’s an experience. Under Jill’s guidance, guests can hand-pollinate two parent blooms to create a brand-new hybrid.

From that moment, your flower begins its journey. Months later, when the first bud unfurls, Jill sends you photos — and you can:

Give your bloom a custom name.

Register it with the Global Hibiscus Society Registry, cementing its place in hibiscus history.

Take home a potted version of your very own living masterpiece.

It’s more than a souvenir. It’s a piece of Hawaii’s beauty that exists nowhere else in the world.

The Legacy in Bloom

Ask Jill what keeps her going after decades of hybridizing, and she smiles: “I see a part of myself in each flower — sturdy, beautiful, unique.” Her work blends the science of horticulture with the artistry of color and form, all rooted in a deep respect for Hawaiian culture and the land that sustains her.

Every visitor leaves with more than just a plant. They leave with a story — of a morning spent among blooms, of hands brushing against petals, of creating something that will live and flower for years to come.
